Based in Amsterdam, RAU Architects is a leading architectural firm recognised for pioneering circular and sustainable architecture. Founded in 1992 by architect Thomas Rau, and based on the awareness of our position and attitude as humans of guests on earth, the firm has consistently pushed the boundaries of traditional design, emphasising minimal environmental impact, adaptability, and the intelligent use of resources.
At RAU, circularity means designing a new system - a fundamentally different approach to architecture and its design methodology. RAU’s approach leads to a building as an active element in a circular economic system, conceived as a bank of materials and as a unique form for a place and people in time. their design process prioritises strategy over aesthetics, creating future-oriented designs that face systemic problems.
RAU has introduced various innovations and developed the first benchmarks for circular and carbon- and energy-neutral architecture. In 2013, RAU built the first circular building that also serves as a material depot. RAU’s portfolio includes various award-winning projects that showcase their commitment to regenerative design. Other pioneering projects followed in 2015, like Liander -the godfather of material passports- and in 2019 with the Triodos Bank, the first circular and remountable office building, a contemporary timber cathedral. Currently, RAU is building the Dutch pavilion for the EXPO 2025 in Osaka, which will be disassembled and rebuilt somewhere else after the expo.
RAU also collaborates with technology partners to innovate and implement circular solutions in the built environment. In 2017, Thomas Rau founded Madaster, a digital platform that documents the materials and products used on a building to facilitate reuse and prevent waste.
Through visionary and practical strategies, RAU has positioned itself as a thought leader in the field, advocating for sustainable urban development and redefining architecture to contribute positively to both society and the environment.
