Korean War Memorial Park for Civil Victims
The meaning behind this project is to allow us to remember the long, painful history which began with the tragedy of the civil war by creating a space for understanding and reconciliation of history far beyond the differences in beliefs. Our aims are:
Firstly, the entire site of Konryeong stream valley will follow a straight-lined path with a distance of over 1km creating “a memorial walkway”, it won’t simply be a monument of architecture, but an area for mourning and refection. Therefore it shall look simple and ordinary.
Secondly, this memorial site will be more than just a place of remembrance for a day.
It will be a place where visitors can look back on and still feel the pain and sacrifice from this historical lesson, which is now paved with an era of peace.
The path and memorial place will be devoted to the remembrance of the victims.
And the monumental park will be a place for reconciliation of history along with other historical events.
“The Memorial park should not exist only for present us.”
-Navillera
During difficult times, victims faced unreasonable deaths,
and their souls were forgotten in the flow of history.
70 years of distorted truth buried deep in the foothills of the Konryeong stream valley.
Although it is too late
for those who died unjustly, and souls remain buried deep in Konryeong stream,
standing at the beginning and end of the valley and mourning,
may the souls of poor victims go from the earth up to heaven,
honoring the victims' names on 108 pillars, as a prayer to them,
to feel their pain and suffering, and see the truth of distorted history,
walking the path of history and memory along the victim's excavation site,
For the victims whose deaths had no reason or hope,
with tears shed in the memorial space near the end of the path,
we may convey our sincere condolences to them.
