International competition aimed at promoting the practice of architecture and urban planning that preserve and sustain local traditions.
It rewards and promotes proposals that build upon local architectural traditions and their unique identity while contributing to the creation of a more beautiful, coherent, sustainable, and socially inclusive urban fabric. The competition encourages the use of local materials and techniques in designs, as well as predominantly traditional solutions that could generate more and better-quality employment opportunities for local construction workers.
The Proposal submitted to the Richard H. Driehaus International Architecture Competition, aimed at promoting the architectural and urban recovery of Spanish historic centers. In this edition, the municipality of Alzira sought to reactivate the western front of its historic center “La Vila” through the restoration of traditional urban fabric and the valorization of key heritage elements, such as the Almohad wall, the remains of the ancient church of Santa María, and the lost Sant Gregori Bridge.
Titled La Rambla del Júcar, the proposal developed a comprehensive urban regeneration strategy, articulating a new landscape and civic axis centered on a ramble (dry riverbed corridor) linked to the nearby river. The design integrated principles of sustainability, heritage recovery, and social inclusion, proposing public affordable housing as a tool to repopulate the historic center and strengthen community ties in a culturally significant environment.
The project was admitted for jury evaluation, having met the required technical criteria in terms of architectural quality, urban integration, and regulatory feasibility. The intervention reinforced the site’s identity through a contemporary approach that respected historical morphology while committing to the revitalization of the traditional residential fabric.
