Fruchtschuppen / Fruit Shed

Elke Knöß-Grillitsch, Peanutz Architekten

The Fruit Shed is a former cargo hall from the 1950s, where freight trains, loaded with fruit and vegetables, were parked and unloaded. The 40-hectare area around the Fruit Shed had lain fallow. The Federal Horticultural Show transformed it into a new urban quarter.
The task was the Conversion and interim use as exhibition space, with changing flower shows, radio studio, and restaurants. Addition of three terraces, connecting to the new city quarter.
The interim use was realised in circular construction. Fixtures were ephemeral, raw, partly rented, to be dismantled afterwards. They were large objects that had been placed in the building, dividing it into different areas, while the existing structure remained visible.
