ARCH-E: Making Architectural Design Competitions More Accessible | Workshop in cooperation with anotHERVIEWture
ARCH-E’s main objective is to promote high-quality architectural solutions for the built environment by increasing the use of Architectural Design Competitions (ADC) in Europe and by making ADCs more accessible, especially for small and/or female-led offices. According to the ACE sector study 2022 only 7% of architecture practices in Europe work on projects abroad and some parameters indicate that mainly large firms do. Aside from that, cross-border participation in ADCs is critically low.
To understand the underlying reasons for that ARCH-E is undertaking research in the form of fact finding and analysis, expert interviews and a large survey conducted by Eva Álvarez and Carlos Gomez (both Universitat Polytècnica València), that will gather data focusing on the project’s main topics. Based on it, practical online tools like the ARCH-E network, the ARCH-E online glossary compiling 11 country-specific perspectives, the ARCH-E SWOT analysis tool and the ADC map to support architects directly are provided. On a longer timescale, ARCH-E hopes to influence the legal frameworks for ADCs and raise awareness among clients of the importance of fair and accessible ADCs.
To reach these goals anotHERVIEWture and ARCH-E are joining forces. Eva Álvarez and Carlos Gomez (engaged in both projects) will conduct a workshop on gender-specific aspects of the ARCH-E survey. At the time of the event the survey’s findings won’t be published yet, participants of the workshop will get a preview on the most interesting findings. Interactive talking formats are also on the agenda, further exploring hurdles for participating in cross-border ADCs.
